Understanding the Basics of the Irish Driving Test

The Irish driving test is a formal assessment carried out by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to check whether you can drive safely, follow the rules of the road and control your vehicle with confidence.

During the test, an RSA driving tester observes your driving in real traffic conditions. They look at how you start and stop, use mirrors and signals, position your car on the road, handle junctions and roundabouts, and respond to other road users. You will also be asked questions on the Rules of the Road and to demonstrate basic technical checks on your vehicle.

Passing the test shows that you have reached the standard required to drive unaccompanied on Irish roads. It is not about perfection, but about safe, consistent and responsible driving.

For the official RSA explanation of the driving test, see:

If you are preparing for your test in Galway and would like structured, one‑to‑one support, you can book driving lessons with Higgins Driving School.
