Overview of the Driving Test and How to Book

Before you apply for the Irish driving test, you must hold a valid learner permit for the correct licence category for 6 months and complete the required Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons.

Once you meet these conditions and have prepared for your test, you can apply through the RSA.

The driving test itself includes:

• A short check of your learner permit, insurance and paperwork

• Questions on road signs and road theory

• Basic technical checks on your vehicle

• Secondary control check and hand signals

• A drive on a set route, including junctions, manoeuvres, hill start and parking

  
  

Your performance is marked against clear RSA standards. At the end, the tester will tell you if you have been successful and will explain any serious or repeated faults.
