Before you apply for the Irish driving test, you must hold a valid learner permit for the correct licence category for 6 months and complete the required Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons. Once you meet these conditions, you can apply for the test through the RSA.
The driving test itself includes:
A short check of your learner permit and paperwork
Questions on road signs and the Rules of the Road
Basic technical checks on your vehicle
A practical drive on a set route, including junctions, roundabouts, hill starts and parking manoeuvres
Your performance is marked against clear RSA standards. At the end, the tester will tell you if you have been successful and will explain any serious or repeated faults.
Full details on the test process and how to apply are available from the RSA here:https://www.rsa.ie/services/learner-drivers/the-driving-test
If you are based in Galway, Higgins Driving School can help you get ready with focused pre‑test lessons on likely routes, common faults and test‑day preparation.
